On April 14, 2026, at 7:30 PM, a sound echoed through the village of Mordarka that will go down in the history of Polish railway infrastructure - the TBM “Jadwiga” broke through to the other side of the mountain, completing the excavation of the longest railway tunnel currently in Poland.
This milestone is also of particular importance to Egis. Egis in Poland, as the leader of the consortium and, above all, the designer of all tunnels within the Podłęże–Piekiełko project, is responsible for developing the design documentation for this investment. It is based on this work that both the railway tunnel and the accompanying evacuation tunnel are now being constructed.
The scope of Egis in Poland’s involvement included, among others:
- design works (building permit designs, detailed designs, and tender documentation);
- obtaining administrative decisions and permits;
- providing the author’s supervision during construction works.
For several years, we have been involved in the design phase of the entire Podłęże–Piekiełko project, preparing documentation for 13 planned tunnels. The evacuation tunnel and the main railway tunnel in Limanowa are the first structures from this group of engineering facilities to take shape on site.
In practice, this means that the first of the tunnels designed by Egis in Poland teams has just become a real engineering structure. It is a great satisfaction to see how years of design work are transforming into infrastructure that will significantly reshape the railway map of the Małopolska region.
We would like to congratulate the contractor consortium Gulermak and Budimex, as well as all teams involved in delivering this stage of the project.
We are not slowing down and are already looking ahead to the next stages of the Podłęże–Piekiełko project, which will include the construction of 12 more tunnels, spectacular railway viaducts, and kilometers of new railway lines.
About the project
Podłęże–Piekiełko Railway: A Step Change in Polish Mobility
The Podłęże–Piekiełko railway line is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in Poland’s recent history. As a key partner in this transformative investment, Egis in Poland is delivering the interdisciplinary design documentation required to turn this massive engineering vision into a reality for the Polish State Railways (PKP PLK).
The project blends the construction of entirely new, high-speed electrified lines with the comprehensive modernization of existing infrastructure to meet the rigorous Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) standards. Read more here
