Meeting the delivery challenge
Egis came to the rescue, mobilising French personnel to replace the Australian Egis staff that were intended to fly to Switzerland to independently verify the vehicle manufacturing. The client was impressed that Covid-19 restrictions did not significantly delay the project delivery.
Environmental: contribute to a cleaner and greener city
Brisbane Metro is a new transport system adding to Brisbane’s greater transport network connecting the city to the suburbs. Its all-electric vehicles have zero tailpipe emissions and contribute to a cleaner and greener city. It is estimated that the new vehicles will save 50,000 tonnes of greenhouse emissions over 20 years.
Brisbane Metro will greatly enhance Brisbane’s public transport network and help address congestion bottlenecks in the city.
Social: accessibility
The vehicle’s low floor design will make it more accessible to everyone and especially to older people and people with disabilities. Additionally the vehicles will have three large mobility aid bays in the first passenger compartment with automated on-request ramp access at the first passenger door. The three large double doors along the length of the vehicle will allow for quicker boarding.
Brisbane Metro vehicles will also have in-built USB charging points and on-board Wi-Fi, to help commuters stay connected and passenger information displays and next stop audio and visual route information.
Innovation: an improvement to public transport network
The Brisbane Metro vehicles will be an Australian-first, using tried and tested European technology that will help future-proof Brisbane’s public transport network. Each vehicle will be 24.4 metres in length and 2.55 metres wide, with the capacity to carry 150 passengers in comfort and 180 passengers in event mode.
Economic: job creation and revitalisation of urban centres
The project is expected to create 2,600 jobs in its early stages of design and construction. The new public transport system will provide improved access to key urban centres, employment, health and education precincts and support enhanced social and economic outcomes for the community.
