The existing tram is on a very old track and service is very poor. Traveling between the beginning and end of the line –a distance of 13 km- takes more than an hour. Due to the intense traffic during peak hours, no priority is given to the tram.
Our studies have shown consistent traffic jams in the same junctions due to various factors; driving habits in Alexandria, auto rickshaws that litter the streets and other factors that are difficult to control even by the traffic department.
Another one of the challenges is that the signals around these junctions is mainly controlled by policemen, despite the accessibility to traffic lights, thus increasing the probability for human error.
The general objective of the project is to turn the Raml Line into a modern and efficient tramline with up-to-date infrastructure, systems and rolling stock, while improving, when possible, the associated urban environment, for cars, pedestrians and residents.
